Paver Patio vs. Concrete: Which Is Right for Your Yard?

A patio is one of the best upgrades you can make to a Fort Mill backyard — but the first decision, pavers or poured concrete, shapes the cost, the look, and how the patio ages. Both are good options. They just have different strengths. Here’s an honest comparison to help you decide.

Upfront cost

Poured concrete almost always wins on initial price. It’s faster to install and uses less labor, so the up-front number is lower. Pavers cost more to install because each unit is set by hand over a prepared base. Where pavers earn it back is over the long haul — more on that below.

Looks and options

Pavers come in a huge range of colors, shapes, and patterns, and they give a high-end, custom look that’s hard to match. Concrete is more uniform, though stamping and staining can dress it up. If curb appeal and resale are top of mind, pavers usually have the edge.

How they handle our soil and weather

This is the big one for our area. Fort Mill’s clay soil shifts with moisture, and we get enough winter freeze-thaw cycles to matter. A solid concrete slab can crack when the ground moves underneath it — and once concrete cracks, you can’t really hide it. Pavers are individual units with sand-filled joints, so they flex with ground movement instead of cracking. That flexibility is a real advantage here.

Repairs

If a paver gets stained or damaged, you lift it out and drop in a replacement — the repair is invisible. Repairing concrete is much harder; patches rarely match, and a serious crack often means replacing the whole slab. Over a 15–20 year horizon, this is where pavers frequently come out ahead on total cost.

So which should you choose?

If the upfront budget is the deciding factor and you’re fine with a simpler look, concrete is a sound, economical choice. If you want the best appearance, easy repairs, and resistance to cracking in our clay soil — and you can spend more now to spend less later — pavers are usually worth it. The right answer depends on your yard, your drainage, and how long you plan to stay.
